Tankless Gas Water Heater
Information current as of
The gas tankless water heater is usually chosen by those consumers who are already on gas
systems and who need a more powerful water heater to keep up with the rigorous demands of their family. It seems obvious that everyone should
have one these units since they are so good at saving space and can reduce your energy bill in this area by 20% and more. However, there is a
greater up front cost associated with tankless heaters that not everyone can afford. The standard tank system can cost just $200-$300 while a
comparible volume tankless system can run over $1000 up front. The long term savings can make up for that different with a couple of years,
making it much more effecient in the long run.
Tankless water heaters are known as on demand systems since they heat the water as you're requesting it. They're also
wonderful in that they can support more than one shower at a time; even the biggest tank systems can have trouble doing double duty.
No energy is wasted in the process of heating water because it doesn't heat any more than you need and its not trying to maintain that heat
over a long period of time. This method makes it much more energy efficent.
If you are unsure whether your home needs a small, medium or large size heater, even based on the per hour heating capacity shown on the side,
then we suggest you contact your local plumbing contractor for their advice. Many of them have extensive experience with installing and choosing
the best units.
In addition to more up front costs, some gas systems may require larger venting supply lines than the standard tank unit required. The gas
tankless system can use the same general venting system with just a few modifications if a larger size is needed.
Most tankless systems are rated to last at least 20 years, sometimes more. Over that period of time you will definitely recoup the added up
front cost in long term savings.
